Locals have complained of crowded streets, drunken behaviour and littering
One of Spain's most visited cities has raised its tourism taxes in a bid to clamp down on overtourism. Barcelona, a stunning destination on the northeastern Spanish coast, is loved by Brits and visitors from all over the world.
However, the city is grappling with issues due to overtourism, including overcrowded streets and masses of litter left by tourists. Meanwhile locals are feeling the pinch as property prices skyrocket due to landlords snapping up holiday rentals. In 2022, city officials announced that Barcelona's tourist tax would be raised over the next two years to address these problems, reports the Express.
Since 2012, tourists have been required to pay a regional tourist tax plus an additional city-wide surcharge. On April 1, 2023, the city tax was bumped up to $2.75 . And from Monday the fee has been increased to $3.25 . One user 'demojob422' said: "Honestly the city is so overrun with tourists that if you come in summer you are annoying most people just by existing and raising their rents. If you want to limit that, go to a hotel or hostel, do not use Airbnb or similar websites."
