Vancouver-based translator Yilin Wang says her original translations of the poetry of Qiu Jin, a Chinese feminist author, were used without permission or credit in an exhibit at a London museum.
A woman is pictured working on her laptop in a stock photo. After a Vancouver-based translator raised allegations of copyright infringement on Twitter, the British Museum issued a statement acknowledging her work had been included in the exhibit through 'unintentional human error.'
Um, hey @britishmuseum, it's come to my attention that your exhibit "China's hidden century" uses my translations of Qiu Jin's poetry, but you never contacted me for permission. Please note this is a copyright infringement! How are you going to fix this?? #NameTheTranslator pic.twitter.
Yilin Wang, a Vancouver-based translator, said she first heard about the exhibit through friends, who recognized her translations and asked if she had been involved. According to Wang, the museum offered to pay her £150 and requested she sign a permission form for the continued use of her work in the catalogue.Wang says she first heard about the exhibit through friends, who recognized her translations and asked if she had been involved.
"If I encountered them somewhere else, I can recognize them because I've thought through the word choice so much," Wang said.
