One day, for example, I traveled with my mom, Carolyn, to Darien, Illinois, the Chicago suburb where she grew up and near where my grandfather worked for General Motors and served as a volunteer firefighter. We took them up on it and returned. The fire department outfitted my son, Felix, with a much-too-large uniform and equipment, which made for some great photos.
Last year, my wife, Amanda, and I scheduled photo shoots in Mobile, Alabama, with her family and in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, with mine. We got all the photos we’d normally get — but with the bonus of including parents and siblings. The result is that our shelves and walls are filled with the kinds of images you just can’t get by pulling out your iPhone.
It’s not going to be easy. Disney is expensive and busy, depending on the calendar, and it’s going to be hard to settle on a plan that works for people traveling from multiple directions. Whether it’s Disney or not, though, we’re trying to continue a tradition that started in 2019 and has been important to us: joint family vacations.
This year’s vacation came several weeks after my stepfather died from COVID-19 and offered a much-needed opportunity for grieving while also making some happy memories. Next year, I hope we can continue the tradition in Orlando and introduce my son to Mickey Mouse.
