OPINION | Bridging the gap: Ford's current Ranger outpaces its predecessor in almost every aspect

The new Ford Ranger became the first bakkie to ever win the South African Car of the Year title in 2023.

More than a decade ago, Ford introduced its first-generation T6 bakkie to the local market, and it sustained a significant period of success. Not only did it sell well, but it also took the fight to Toyota's Hilux in monthly sales. The T6 Ranger was in production for what feels like an eternity. Only towards the end of 2022 did production cease at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, ending with 873 751 vehicles produced. During that time, the bakkie underwent numerous facelifts and spawned special editions.

Customers got their wish in December 2022 when the next-generation model was officially launched in South Africa. What continues to be a proud moment is that the current generation Ranger is produced at Ford's Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, which also benefitted from a R15.8 billion investment. South Africans need to be in the know if we want to create a prosperous future.
