The BRICS group has welcomed nine new countries as partner states, marking a significant expansion of the influential bloc. The additions bring the total number of BRICS partner countries to 17.

Starting off the new year, the BRICS group has welcomed nine new countries as partner states on January 1, 2025. After admitting four new members in 2024, BRICS officially welcomed nine new nations as partner countries on January 1, 2025. Two of these are from Latin America, three are from southeast Asia, three are located in other parts of Asia and one is from Africa.

BRICS states that partner countries will have the opportunity to propose initiatives but will not participate in the approval of documents or voting. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates joined BRICS as member states on January 1, 2024. Membership was offered to six countries during the 15th annual BRICS Summit held in Johannesburg in August 2023. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE accepted the invitation and became BRICS members in January 2024. Argentina initially agreed to join the group but with a change in government in December 2023, the country overturned the initial decision, thus preventing Argentina from joining BRICS as a member in January 2024. While Argentina rejected the invitation, Saudi Arabia still had not made a formal decision as of the end of 2024. Initially founded in 2009 as BRIC – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – the organization grew in 2010 with the addition of South Africa. The group is an economic powerhouse, including top producers of key commodities like oil, gas, grains, meat and minerals
