Biringer Nurseries in Mt. Vernon, Washington, have become experts on espaliered trees
If you’ve never planted your own fruit tree, never shaped, nurtured and watched it grow and then picked its fresh fruit, you have missed one of life’s great pleasures.
The common perception today is that fruit trees require a lot of room. However, with the new styles of fruiting trees, that’s no longer true. I remember visiting British garden stores 30 years ago, and all they had were espaliered trees trained to grow up a building or run along a fence. They were a thing of beauty and truly an art form.
The beauty of this technique is that only one tree needs to be planted. The selection of varieties on each tree must be compatible for cross pollination. Most fruit trees with only a single variety will need a second tree of a different, but compatible, variety for pollination.
