Brian Harman surprised the golf world and won the 151st Open Championship. Harman, 36, held off a star-studded group of contenders like Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Tom Kim and Jason Day but never allowed the tournament to get closer than three shots Sunday.
Before this week he had just two career top-10 finishes in majors, but one came last season at the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews.Harman entered Sunday with a five-shot lead, but within five holes it appeared he might give it away. He bogeyed the first hole and then buried his second shot on No. 3 deep into some greenside rough. But Harman found a way to get a chip out of that rough and within seven feet, and Harman made the difficult par save.
The odd part about Harmans dominant week wasn’t necessarily dominant in approach or with his short game around the green. What he did was stay on schedule every single hole — No. 11 in strokes gained off the tee — and put himself on greens. He didn’t put himself close to pins that often, but once he was on a green he didn’t make mistakes. He made all but one put inside 10 feet and didn’t have to three-putt a single hole.
