Brexit talks could see Northern Ireland elections delayed amid rising hope of a deal

The Government could once again extend the deadline for calling fresh elections in Northern Ireland as the UK and EU make progress in long-running negotiations on post-Brexit trade in the region

Deputy Political Editor.understands the UK is not regarding Thursday 19 January – the date by which ministers must call fresh elections for the Stormont Assembly within the following 12 weeks – as the deadline for a deal with Brussels on the Northern Ireland Protocol.could once again postpone the deadline to give space for the two sides to reach a deal.
