We chat with ImAVirgo stars BrettGray and Allius Barnes about the script of their new primevideo series upending genre expectations, the ease of becoming best friends on set, and more:
Coming-of-age stories have never been like I'm a Virgo. Hailing from the mind behind the surreal comedy Sorry to Bother You, this absurdist comedy series continues Boots Riley's exploration of the fantastical, centering its story on a young 13-foot-tall Black man who finally makes his way out into the world after being sheltered by his aunt and uncle for the first 19 years of his life.
In anticipation of the show's premiere, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with stars Brett Gray and Allius Barnes to discuss I'm a Virgo, Riley's ability to upend genre expectations with his writing, the ease of making on-set friendships, and more. Allius Barnes: Yeah, no, I would say everything that he just said, honestly. But more specifically on the scripts, I think reading the scripts, I'm like, "Okay, I'm very aware that this is a Boots Riley project, whatever that means. If you know, you know." But I'm reading the story and I'm like, "Okay, this takes place in Oakland, it's Black teenagers, I'm just waiting for the sad thing.
