The Prime Minister has announced the date of the next general election in a surprise announcement outside Downing Street this evening

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tonight made a shock announcement. The Conservative leader announced there will be a general election on 4 July.‘Now is the moment for Britain to choose its future’

‘Earlier today I spoke to his majesty the king to request the dissolution of parliament and we will have a general election on the 4th July.’ The news comes despite the Labour party – led by Sir Keir Starmer –being way ahead in the polls. Labour is currently polling at 44 per cent, while the Tories are on 23.

Speculation was mounting earlier today that an election was on the cards after Rishi called a Cabinet meeting for 4.15pm. David Cameron cut short a trip to Albania to attend and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt cancelled an appearance on ITV.When asked in Parliament earlier today if there was to be a summer general election, the Prime Minister said only:
