Inflation has remained stubbornly high in SA since peaking in July 2022 at 7.8%
Headline consumer inflation rose for the second month in a row in March, to 7.1% year on year from 7.0% in February, data from Statistics SA showed on Wednesday. Analysts polled by Reuters had predicted a drop to 6.9%., leading to a run of interest-rate hikes by the SA Reserve Bank.
At its last meeting in March, the Bank surprised analysts with a larger-than-expected 50 basis-point hike. The SA Reserve Bank targets inflation of between 3% and 6%. Core inflation, which excludes the prices of food, nonalcoholic beverages, fuel and energy, was at 5.2% year on year in March, the same as in February.
