BREAKING: 2025 AFCON Qualifier Groups Announced
The continent's 48 biggest footballing countries now know who they have to face in order to book their flight to Morocco between 21 December 2025 and 18 January 2026.
Twelve groups of four have been selected to see which 24 sides will go to the finals in the north African nation, who will be hosting the competition for the first time since 1988. Heading into that edition of the tournament, Egypt were the champions of Africa, but now the reigning champions are Ivory Coast, and Emerse Fae's side will have to navigate their way through Group G. It includes Zambia, Sierra Leone and Chad as the Elephants looking to become the first team to defend their continental crown since the Pharaohs won three consecutive championships between 2006 and 2010.
Egypt, the record AFCON winners, have been pitted against Cape Verde, Mauritania and Botswana in Group C, and will look to carry their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification form, in which they are unbeaten, to the continental stage. The side the Elephants beat in the 2023 AFCON final, Nigeria, will have to face off competition from Benin, Libya and Rwanda in Group D in order to make sure they are present in Morocco to outdo their performance at the tournament in the Ivory Coast. The host nation of the competition, the Atlas Lions, have been drawn in Group B, and will have to contest their qualifiers against Gabon, Central African Republic and Lesotho.
