Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy unveiled the province's 2023 budget on Thursday. It shows Ontario plans to start posting surpluses in a year.
The government will be leaning heavily on booming revenues to outweigh increased spending on health care, which includes boosts to hospitals, home care and the medical workforce.
They are eliminating double fares for most local transit services in the Greater Golden Horseshoe when commuters also use GO Transit services.The government is addressing health-care staffing shortages by investing $200 million in supports to grow the workforce. The province is also adding 100 medical school spots and 154 spots for medical school graduates to train as residents.
The budget says the province will also put an additional $202 million each year toward homeless prevention and supportive housing programs, where people experiencing homelessness are connected with services like job training in addition to a roof over their heads.The government plans to accelerate the $1 billion it pledged over three years for home care.
The province is also earmarking $25 million over two years for early reading enhancements, an additional $12.6 million over two years in targeted math supports and $6.2 million over three years for students with disabilities to pursue cooperative education opportunities.The government says it will spend an additional $25.1 million this year to support searches at residential school burial sites across the province.
