Con un dominante cierre, la venezolana Joselyn Brea ganó el jueves la medalla de oro en los 5.000 metros femeninos en el atletismo de los Juegos Panamericanos de Santiago 2023.
Brea, de 29 años, terminó con un tiempo de 16:04.12 para imponerse sobre la estadounidense Taylor Werner, quien cerró con 16:08.48 para llevarse la plata. El bronce fue para la canadiense Julie-ann Staheli con un registro de 16:06.75. Brea, quien ganó la misma prueba en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe de San Salvador, conquistó su primera medalla en una justa continental.
Corriendo bajo una inusual temperatura fría para la primavera de Santiago, Brea se despegó al inicio de la última vuelta y cruzó la meta con una ventaja de casi 100 metros sobre Werner. Su medalla es la cuarta de oro para Venezuela en Santiago 2023 y la primera en el atletismo. En tanto, el canadiense Charles Philibert-Thiboutot se coronó en los 1.500 masculinos tras superar a su compatriota Robert Heppenstall.
