Brazil hits record for daily Covid-19 deaths, indicating that the nation is still in the thick of its battle against the virus even as some areas of the country are beginning to open up
Gravediggers prepare the coffin of a person who is suspected to have passed away from the coronavirus disease , at Duque de Caxias public cemetery, near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil May 5, 2020.
The states with the most cases in descending order are Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the southeast and Ceara in the northeast, where capital city Fortaleza will enter a full lockdown on Friday. The decree from Gov. Flávio Dino will last 10 days to begin with and applies to one-fifth the state’s population.
“We didn’t go for total shutdown, we have kept the basic level of activities, and we will be watching,” Dino said in a video call with The Associated Press on Tuesday. “Collapse happens if we let everyone get sick at the same time,” Lula said. “Every week we have to try to push that date back.”
