Yaya Mavundla's exhibition opened on Women’s Day, 9 August and runs until 31 August 2023. This is her first solo exhibition and features her paintings.
To uplift black and queer women artists in SA, Mavundla believes that people need to be provided with equal opportunities regardless of their gender identity and skin colour.
One of the reasons she chose Constitution Hill for her exhibition is because it had been a welcoming venue for her to collaborate and host her events, she says. She also chose the venue because she understands the importance of"utilising such a historical venue that speaks so much of our heritage, history and human rights."
"Also, when the infamous Amsterdam Rainbow dress came to Africa for the first time, and I was invited to be the first African to wear it, photographed outside the Constitutional Court," she adds.Trans joy and family bonds are big parts of the transgender experience lost in media coverage and anti-trans legislation
Mavundla's work aims to uplift trans voices and encourage them to take control of their own identity. Her work is also about trans visibility, which is important to her; growing up in Kranskop, KwaZulu-Natal, there were no trans or queer people that she could draw from or relate to.
