Cherry Creek high schools announced this week they would no longer name a valedictorian.The pursuit of excellence has suffered another blow.From February 23 to March 12, thousands of high school students from hundreds of high schools throughout Colorado competed in the single-elimination annual girls and boys CHSAA State Basketball Tournaments.
The justification for this abrupt departure from an award that has existed far longer than has The Denver Post itself was severalfold — each additional argument more concerning than the last. Looks like Marriam-Webster got it wrong. In an earlier, cruder time, such an error might have impacted a test grade that impacted Webster’s GPA and class rank. Now, we pat them on the head and say “so close. You are special.”
High schools already have a participation ribbon: the diploma. Until Harvard, Yale, West Point, CU-Boulder and scholarship-awarding organizations go to a pure blind lottery system or a purely demographic and economic matrix for admissions, students will need to be compared to each other. What better way to do that than a class rank based on demonstrated mastery of academics?
· Eliminate homework. It is such a drag to have the pressure of completing time-sensitive work, when life outside of high school will never require such nonsense.· Mandate uniforms. The distraction of trying not to dress like a goof, while being completely distracted by how the attractive people dress is the slow train to Angstville.
