Many holidaymakers may have been exposed to pollutants which have been linked to dementia

A new study has found an alarming link between exposure to smoke from wildfires and brain diseases, which include dementia. Published in JAMA Internal Medicine, the team's findings lay bare the environmental and health damage the recent wildfires have done across the world.

Burning wood emits the most dangerous type of pollution to human health, these are PM2.5 that can bypass our body's natural resistance and enter your blood stream. With wildfires raging in holiday hotspots of Spain, Greece and Italy, many may have been exposed to the pollution during their break abroad.

Geo News reports estimates of nearly 188,000 new cases of dementia every year were linked to total PM2.5 exposure in the US. This is combined with the impact of the toxic components of pesticides used in agriculture.
