ICYMI: Boundary lines blocking non-profit's development of Nova Scotia Home for Colored Children land | SaltWire

Crowds celebrate the opening of Kinney Place, the site of the former Home for Colored Children, in this file photo from Oct. 22, 2022. - Tim KrochakAkoma has big, big plans for their 129 hectares in Dartmouth, they just need HRM to bump back their boundary line.

But Akoma is aiming to add more affordable housing as well as a long-term care facility, a sports facility, a mixed-used development and a cemetery. “That boundary line is not helping the Black community at all,” she said. “There is money flowing now unlike any time that I’ve seen it and we want to take advantage of it and do things for the community, and the greater community, but we can’t because we have to wait for this Regional Plan.”

Coun. Lisa Blackburn said the next update on the Regional Plan review is expected in March, but she will check with her colleagues about this issue.
