National Bank Open 2023: Katie Boulter wins to set up Coco Gauff tie but Venus Williams goes out
Boulter beat Coco Gauff in their only previous meeting, triumphing in three sets at the 2021 Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne
The 27-year-old ended the home hopes of Canadian wildcard Rebecca Marino with a 6-3 6-1 win in an hour and six minutes. Sixth seed Gauff had a first-round bye, but fellow American Venus Williams lost 6-2 7-5 to compatriot Madison Keys. Boulter, meanwhile, never looked back after breaking world number 103 Marino's serve to love in the fifth game of the opening set and sealed it with another break on her first set point.
