Boris Johnson rise and fall is historic, but don't rule out a return

His first bid for No 10 lasted just a few days after he was abandoned by allies Michael Gove and Andrea Leadsom. He was made Foreign Secretary bya gamble which failed as he proved ill-suited to the smooth diplomacy required to oversee relations with foreign friends and foes. Mr Johnson cut short his stint in the Foreign Office by resigning in protest at Mrs May’s fudged Brexit policy.

When the job of Prime Minister became available again in 2019, Mr Johnson’s rise was almost inevitable. With Parliament in a hopeless deadlock, only he brought the brutal simplicity needed to cut the Gordian knot.

Things went sour almost immediately, thanks to a tiny virus from China. He was unable to start implementing his “levelling up” vision as he battled against the pandemic. Much went wrong – indeed, he almost died himself – but the UK’s vaccines rollout was a triumph. The response to the Ukraine war was another triumph, but by that point things were turbulent on the home front.
