Waterstones boss James Daunt backed forthcoming price increases arguing that books are ‘dramatically more expensive’ in the US and Europe than in the UK kt_grant reports
that price hikes are “overdue” as they warned that UK printers have been battered by a host of cost pressures including
James Daunt, managing director at Waterstones, and Brian Murray, the president and chief executive of publishing house HarperCollins, confirmed that books would become more expensive in the coming months.Paper prices have gone up very significantly… [Publishers] have to add on a pound to the price of [their] book to make the same money.”
“Many of our distributors point this out to us all the time because [they] operate on such thin margins…They’re really feeling the squeeze.” The cost of getting a book printed in China has gone up by “30 or 40 per cent” where logistics alone are concerned, said Brendan Perring, general manager at the Independent Print Industries Association.
Booksellers such as Kate Davies, owner of Adventure into Books, an independent shop in Perthshire, have already started to witness the effect of price increases.
