Boyd’s new book, Heroin, An Illustrated History, has a deceptively anodyne title and is adorned with beautifully rendered illustrations. But this is not coffee table art book. The author, an exemplary public intellectual, has a long history of working with grassroots anti-prohibition groups as well as publishing academic papers and an earlier book on related issues, 2017’s Busted: An Illustrated History of Drug Prohibition in Canada.

Heroin , a derivative of morphine, in turn derived from opium, was first synthesized in 1898 by Frederick Bayer and Company, of Aspirin fame. Bayer marketed heroin as a cough suppressant and the product was legally available in Canadian markets for decades.
