Doublespeak is an excellent followup to Alisa Smith’s Speakeasy
Info: The book launch for Doublespeak will be held on April 27 at 7 p.m. at Red Truck Beer Company, 295 East 1st Ave, Vancouver
Smith opens Doublespeak with former bank teller and Clockwork Gang insider Lena Stillman operating in a purgatorial “perpetual winter.” She’s on a remote island outpost in Alaska working as a code analyst for the Strategic Services Unit. The Second World War has barely ended and already there’s talk of the “coming war” between democracy and communism.
Bill, now calling himself William Yardley, has escaped jail, immersed himself in the local criminal underworld, and begun to set himself up as the latest kingpin. He’s juggling local materials with geopolitical operations, keeping the world safe for illicit free market capitalism.
