Regardless of why the gas was present, it is extremely dangerous to inhale in large amounts, according to experts

The gas that killed 17 people in the Angelo informal settlement in Ekurhuleni was apparently not the illegal gold mineworkers' real target, but rather the cylinders it came in, which are fashioned into what are called pendukas - a bowl used to sift gold particles.

According to Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi’s office, preliminary investigations have revealed that nitric acid was being used by the mineworkers illegally to extract gold from the soil in the informal settlement. A source in Lesufi’s office confirmed that the mineworkers were after the cylinders instead of the nitric oxide itself. What is nitric oxide?

Harding says that in terms of mining operations, nitric acid might be used to process the ore to purify minerals, or it could even be further processed into nitrates, which can be used to make explosives.
