The offenders targeted victims in Accrington, Wilpshire and Belthorn who were asked to withdraw money and exchange it for Euros
'Despicable and heartless' fraudsters are pretending to be police officers to trick Lancashire residents into handing over cash.
The first incident happened in Accrington on Tuesday, October 3, where two victims in their 80s received a call from someone falsely claiming to be a police officer looking into a counterfeit and fake money investigation. They told the victim to withdraw money, and to tell the bank that it was for house renovations.The cash was collected, then, they received further calls telling them to exchange further cash for Euros. This was later collected for a second time.
This was collected, and the victim then received a further call to withdraw and change another large sum of money, which was collected. The victim received a final instruction to move a large sum from their savings to their current account. A further request was also made to change a large amount of cash into Euros which would be collected by a courier. They were later called again to ask to bring high value items to a meeting point.
