After finishing third in district, the Boerne Champion Chargers are set to make their state-tournament debut
BOERNE — On the surface, Boerne Champion’s journey to the UIL state baseball tournament defies explanation.That’s the Chargers reality as they prepare to play in a UIL Class 5A state semifinal against Argyle at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Magnolia West and Frisco Reedy play in the other 5A semifinal at 4 p.m. Thursday. The 5A state championship is at noon Saturday.
It's a historic appearance for the Chargers, who are making their state-tournament debut. They nearly got there in 2016 when they lost against Alamo Heights 2-0 in a one-game regional final playoff. Mules pitcher Forrest Whitley, who became the Astros’ first-round pick the following week, recorded 14 strikeouts and allowed one hit.
Champion is in the playoffs for the first time since 2019. The Chargers advanced to the regional semifinals in 2018 and 2019. In 2020, the Chargers were 3-0 in district before the season was canceled due to the pandemic.
