Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft completes important milestone by docking with the space station
The crew access arm is seen as it swings into position for Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner spacecraft atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The rocket and spacecraft launched Thursday, May 19, 2022.Boeing’s spacecraft reached the International Space Station Friday, marking an important milestone for the company as it prepares to launch astronauts later this year.
The spacecraft entered a stable orbit and began its trek toward the space station, but there was a glitch. Two of the 12 spacecraft thrusters used for big engine burns failed. The first thruster fired for a second and then shut down. The flight control system turned on a second thruster, which fired for about 25 seconds before shutting down. A third thruster worked — part of Starliner’s built-in redundancy that performed as intended.
“We do get to stake the claim of being the first people to fly in Starliner in space,” NASA astronaut Bob Hines said before launching into space.
