The quarterback wants to get an idea of what the CFL landscape is going to look like in 2023 before signing with any team.
“I want to hear their pitch and what’s going on there, but what I said two days ago before the West Final is I want to go into free agency,” Mitchell told host Ryan Pinder. “I want to find out what the offers are. I want to find out where the coaches are going to end up, I want to find out where some players are going to end up and who is even going to make it to free agency as a player.
“At this point in my career, I’m not going to fight over a certain amount of money with a different team. It’s more, to me, I want to build on the legacy I’ve started.” Mitchell had nothing but good things to say about the Ticats and head coach Orlondo Steinauer. He repeatedly said he intended on respecting the organization and hearing what they had to say.
More than anything, though, Mitchell said he wanted to make sure that wherever he signed, there were the pieces in place that are required to compete for a Grey Cup.“The biggest thing is you have to look around and say, ‘How do I sign with a team and give them the opportunity to win?’ Same thing I did here in Calgary,” Mitchell told the.
“I want to continue building that and I think the only way to do that is continue being who I am, try to put guys around me, and I think if there’s some guys I want out there and I’m going to go ask Hamilton or whoever, the team I want to sign with, I say, ‘I want this guy, I want to be able to throw to this guy, I want to have this guy protecting me, I believe in this guy on defence you should really go get him.’ I’ve gotta be willing to take a little bit less in order to make that happen.
