BMW will resurrect the M5 wagon.
BMW released a handful of teaser pictures showing off portions of a camouflaged prototype, saying it plans to begin testing in Germany on the road and then on the Nürburgring. It also said the M5 Touring will have a "partially electrified drive system" as standard, just like the sedan.
No technical specifications have been released just yet, but rumors suggest a 700-hp-plus hybrid V-8 powertrain with all-wheel-drive, similar to the drive unit found in the ultra-fast BMW XM, complete with a small all-electric driving range. This isn't the first time BMW has built an M5 Touring. The first M5 wagon came all the way back in 1992, on the second-generation E34. It sold in small numbers in Europe, and now demands a high premium on the collector market. The spectacular V-10-powered E60 M5 also got a wagon variant starting in 2007, but also failed to make its way to the states.We suspect this new M5 Touring will suffer the same fate, seeing as how BMW hasn't sold a 5-Series Touring in the U.S. since 2010.
