We’d all like to be important and interesting enough to be shuffled about in an armoured car. People who need Bullet and Explosive Resistant Vehicles don’t work 9-5, don’t have to do line manager reviews and don’t commute in rush hour. Which sounds pretty great. But they are also at risk of assassination, which doesn’t sound so enjoyable.
There really doesn’t seem to be anything overlooked in the quest to provide ultimate protection, which will surely help the occupants sleep at night. Or during the day, given how comfy those seats look. The 7 Series Protection, for example, features a self-sealing fuel tank; so even if a bullet pierces, the casing of the tank ‘automatically closes breaches made by the impact’ and you can carry on without the loss of any fuel.
Nobody aboard an i7 or 7 Series Protection will suffer for the additional safety measures, however. These will be just as luxurious as any other flagship BMW saloon, if not more so thanks to the ‘varied range of options for individualising’. Extras include a Bowers&Wilkins Diamond sound system and a cool box to keep the drinks chilled, while buyers also get motorised doors, heated side windows and Individual Merino leather seats as standard.
But there is a problem for both when it comes to the whole escaping baddies bit of the job - they’re not that fast. Kerbweights for both Protection models haven’t been issued, but that extra safety cell won’t have come lightly. The i7 is based on , with the same 544hp and 549lb ft; in the version for a not-at-risk individual, that means 0-62mph in 4.7 seconds, 149mph and up to 385 miles of range. It’s a 2,715kg car. For the Protection, the sprint time has nearly doubled, at 9.
