Besides providing ambulances and other emergency vehicles, the R76m will upgrade medical facilities, supply medical and testing equipment and provide hundreds of extra beds for Covid-19 patients. SA motor companies have been at the forefront of private-sector efforts to support the fight against Covid-19. During the industry lockdown, several companies adapted idle machinery to manufacture a range of medical equipment, including face masks and ventilators.

BMW SA MD Tim Abbott said additional support for the fight against Covid-19 was urgently needed. “Hospitals are starting to fill up with victims of this virus,” he said. “It is inevitable that it will spread faster and further.”
