IF YOU HAPPEN to be in the market for a nimble little drop-top sports car, the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible ain’t it. Almost 16 feet long and 4,736 pounds heavy, this audacious sky machine feels like a throwback to the era of classic motoring, when Cadillac, Auburn, Duesenberg and others built luxury convertibles so enormous they dwarfed the people inside.

And sometimes when I drove it I felt even smaller, such as when panhandlers would approach this black-chromed yacht of an automobile at intersections asking for money....
