Thousands of people heading to the Hill Country for the eclipse will also see one of the best bluebonnet displays in years.
FREDERICKSBURG, Texas -- As the total solar eclipse nears and visitors from around the world are expected to come to towns in the path of totality, the timing couldn't be more perfect for a bluebonnet superbloom. Our El Niño weather pattern over recent months has provided the right weather conditions for the bumper crop.
It's all about getting the right weather at the right time, and the El Niño pattern that started last summer and continues this spring supplied just the right ingredients. El Niño patterns generally bring Central Texas colder and wetter winters. In checking weather records for Fredericksburg, the winter of 2023-2024 ended up near average for both temperatures and precipitation, but far wetter than the previous winter. The average temperature for December through February was 49.1 degrees compared to the 30-year average of 48.9 degrees from 1991-2020. 5.25" of rain fell compared to the average of 5.44".
