Berrios let loose with his frustration after controversial pitching change
As the Blue Jays season was falling apart in real time last week in Minneapolis, for the players it must have felt like a car crash taking place in slow motion.Even though the club’s reliance on analytics was well established long before manager John Schneider’s controversial call that ended the season, when starter Jose Berrios was removed from the game after pitching a shutout through three-plus innings, there was shock and frustration.podcast on Wednesday.
As a hitter, Merrifield knows exactly the shift in mindset he would feel if a dominant pitcher he was facing was removed. “I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus, but it was a shock we were pulling him so early,” Merrifield said. “I feel bad for Jose. The game plan was, from my understanding, communicated to the pitching staff before the game. I think in Jose’s mind, like most of our minds, he was pitching so well he might have earned another couple of batters or another couple of innings.
“It was a bummer,” Merrifield said. “Nobody wants to not play, especially in a playoff game. Selfishly, I thought I did enough throughout the year warrant that chance to make a mark in the playoffs. At the end of the day, it’s not my call … the decision was made and it is what it is.”
