Facing Jordan Hicks and his 102-m.p.h. fastball, Teoscar Hernández, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Matt Chapman stroked back-to-back-to-back one-out singles. Gurriel’s hit was bobbled by Cardinals centre-fielder Dylan Carlson, allowing Hernández to go to third, but Gurriel tried to go to second on the misplay and was thrown out.
With two out and a runner on third, Chapman’s single scored Hernández with the go-ahead run and walks to Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio loaded the bases for George Springer, who greeted reliever Junior Fernandez with a grand slam.José Berríos was solid into the sixth, with the only hiccup coming in the third when he gave up three hits over a four-batter span and allowed St. Louis to tie the game.
Mayza needed just three pitches to end the inning and, thanks to the Jays’ explosion in the bottom of the inning, he wound up with his fifth win of the season.The 10 runs gave the Jays an even 50 over their past four games, something they had only accomplished one other time in franchise history. That came less than a year ago, when the Jays scored 11 runs in each end of a doubleheader in Baltimore on Sept.
