While Springer had been absent from the lineup for most of the past week anyway, the Jays offence stalled on Saturday as they lost two in a row for the first time under Schneider.
With precious little left-handed depth in the bullpen, it looms as a serious loss for the Jays, who have now dropped three of their past four. “As close as we can get to the 100 per cent version of George is what we are shooting for,” Schneider said. “Hopefully it’s just 10 days and he’s good to go. At least the Jays have a backup play – and potentially a good one – with the trade deadline acquisition of versatile Whit Merrifield, who is already making an impact with his new team. The former all star has played centre field in all three games here, recording five hits.The Jays lost one of their steadier reliever when Mayza attempted to make a play at the plate and collided with Twins base-runner Nick Gordon, who scored on the play.
His absence will be a serious one given the Jays lack of left-handed depth in the bullpen and the workload he logged. Saturday’s appearance was his 41st of the season logging 33.2 innings.the team is hopeful his season is not done.
