The connection to the Blue Jays' glory days continues to disappear with Kevin Pillar's trade to the Giants. (ShiDavidi )
for three players Tuesday afternoon leaves Marcus Stroman, Aaron Sanchez, Justin Smoak, Ryan Tepera and Dalton Pompey as the sole remaining connections from those heady days.
All, save for Tepera, aren’t likely long for the organization. Smoak is a pending free agent at the end of this season, while Stroman and Sanchez are up at the end of 2020. Pompey is out of options on a team that no longer has a place for him.Monday’s Rogers Centre crowd of 10,460 was a demonstration of the local response to that, barely surpassing the 10,314 on hand April 19, 2010 for an 8-1 win over the Kansas City Royals.
That was best demonstrated during a 2017 series at Wrigley Field, when he chased down a Kris Bryant smash, jumping through the ivy into a brick wall to make one of his best catches. Despite that, Pillar allowed his manager to pencil in 145-plus games, 200-plus total bases, and a handful of hot streaks. His aggressiveness at the plate could be maddening, but as a 32nd-round pick in the 2011 draft who’s produced 14.6 WAR over parts of six big-league season, there’s a danger in picking too much on his flaws.Still, like Stroman and Sanchez, he’s a pending free agent after the 2020 season. The likelihood is that he won’t time with the current core.
In return for Pillar they get infielder Alen Hanson and righty reliever Derek Law, depth pieces with some big-league experience, along with Juan De Paula, a 21-year-old right-hander who posted a 1.71 ERA in 47.1 innings at short-season A Staten Island last year, but is now onto his fourth organization. That will be up to the likes of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
