Word is that Victor Martinez, who worked extensively with Guerrero in spring training, returned to Toronto with the team from Miami. There has been more than one low point during the season for Guerrero, who is stuck on nine home runs — tied for fourth on the Jays — and a mere 15 behind MLB leader, Shohei Ohtani. The visuals of the recently completed series in Miami were certainly tough to watch as a once-savvy hitter often looks lost and out of synch in the box. Guerrero was a miserable 1-for-12 at the plate against the Marlins, a series he spent hitting cleanup.Perhaps more quality time with Martinez will unlock something in Guerrero that hitting coach Guillermo Martinez, hitting strategist Dave Hudgens, assistant hitting coach Hunter Mense and bench coach Don Mattingly have been unable to do.
It has been a bumpy season so far, but nowhere near a disaster. The Jays have been living just outside of a wild-card spot for a few weeks now, but are one modest win streak away from climbing back in and staying there.
