The bravado that at times veers towards bluster is part of the personality and drive that makes Alek Manoah an elite competitor and a despised opponent.
There will be some solace for the Jays in that their starter got his scuffling season back on track.
It was easily the best outing of the season for Manoah, who calmly continued working towards regaining his form between starts and was near perfectly composed in his latest. It was Manoah, you’ll recall, who called out Cole as the biggest cheater in baseball last spring. And it was Cole, surely you’ve heard, who leapt out of the dugout last season to mother-bleep Manoah after he hit Yankees’ Aaron Judge with a pitch.Cole allowed just four hits in 5.2 innings, matching Manoah in his efficiency. And the Yankees ace, the early favourite in the AL Cy Young race, has not allowed a run in 20.2 innings.
Perhaps he would have remained in the game, if the Jays had a lead at that point, something that should have been the case if not for repeated opportunities squandered on the basepaths.
