Blue Jackets fall 2-1 to islanders, wasting a strong performance by goalie Joonas Korpisalo for seventh straight loss
ELMONT, NY ― It’s never a good thing when a hockey coach starts using baseball terminology during tough times.
Emil Bemstrom was credited with the Blue Jackets’ lone goal, which was scored with just 20.5 seconds left when rookie Marcus Bjork fired a slap shot off him that deflected into the net while Korpisalo sat on the bench for a 6-on-5 advantage. Costly turnovers by young players were cited as the biggest reason the Blue Jackets entered the game allowing a whopping 35.5 shots per game, but the past two games that hasn’t really been the issue. Some of the most egregious recent errors belong to veterans, including star forward Johnny Gaudreau against the Islanders.
He went 13-for-13 in the first period, making several huge saves, before the Islanders finally got one past him on Pageau’s rebound goal in the second. Korpisalo’s excellence continued in the third, when he went x-for-x before being pulled for an extra attacker with x:xx left and the Blue Jackets trailing 2-0.
Gaudreau also missed the net three times, failing to record a shot on goal while logging 19:39 in ice time.
