Blue Beetle #1 is a brand-new chapter for Jaime Reyes that has humor, heart, and dramatic developments.
Blue Beetle's life got a lot more complicated in his most recent miniseries, Blue Beetle: Graduation Day by Josh Trujillo and Adrian Gutierrez. The young hero graduated from high school and moved to Palmera City where he eventually met two new Scarab users: Green Beetle Nitida and Yellow Beetle Dynastes. To make matters even more complicated, the Horizon, a peaceful splinter group of the villainous Reach, ventured to Earth seeking protection from their war-hungry counterparts.
Blue Beetle #1 Goes All Out For Its Exciting New Chapter Trujillo and Gutierrez reunite for Blue Beetle #1, and the adventure picks up where Graduation Day left off. Blue Beetle fights a group of Madmen with his new Beetle partners while Ted Kord lends a hand. The fight is successful, but Jaime feels like he's floundering leading his new teammates, especially with the amount of collateral damage they leave behind.
Fans who loved Blue Beetle's previous comic are going to love this new story. It keeps the same balance of humor and action Graduation Day had and satisfyingly expands on the previously established plot points. The book moves at a strong pace and gives fans plenty of action, and a surprisingly sobering dose of social commentary with the Horizon plot. Gutierrez's art really stands out in the Madmen fight sequence and during the shocking cliffhanger ending.
Blue Beetle #1 is a Bold, Exciting Beginning for Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle #1 is a satisfying read for any reader, whether they've known him for years or have only become fans of the hero. While familiarity with Graduation Day helps contextualize Jaime's new story, the new comic is very new-reader-friendly for those who gained an interest in Blue Beetle's adventures after his recent cinematic outing.
