The poll Amira Elghawaby wrote about had found that negative sentiment toward Muslims was higher in Quebec and that this corresponded with support for restrictions on religious symbols, said a spokesperson for the group that commissioned it.

When Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet met Amira Elghawaby on Wednesday, seeking an apology for her remarks about Quebec, both spoke of building bridges to deal with Islamophobia. Emerging from that meeting, Elghawaby said while she still believes the law is discriminatory, she did apologize for suggesting that Quebec’s Bill 21, which bans religious symbols such as the hijab, had fanned the flames of Islamophobia.
“We had a very good discussion, and I am eager to establish more bridges for dialogue,” Elghawaby told reporters who staked out the meeting.
