Calls for Scott Benton, MP for Blackpool South, to resign as an MP have been issued by Labour's general election candidate for his seat, Chris Webb
The Labour Party candidate set to take on Scott Benton in the next general election has launched a scathing attack on his opponent following his suspension of the Conservative Party whip, calling for him to resign.
Mr Benton was caught on camera telling undercover reporters posing as investors how he was willing to take actions which would break Parliament’s lobbying rules. Under those rules, MPs are forbidden from advocating a particular matter in the House of Commons or raising it with ministers in return for payment.They are also prohibited from serving as a paid parliamentary adviser or consultant or guiding firms on ways to influence Parliament.
He said: "On the steps of Downing Street, Rishi Sunak pledged to lead a government with 'integrity, professionalism and accountability at every level'. If the Prime Minister meant what he said, he must do the right thing and call for his MP Scott Benton to resign immediately after another example of Conservative sleaze.
Any resignation would trigger a by-election, with LancsLive understanding Labour are ready for the immediate triggering if Mr Benton does step down as an MP altogether.
