Black working-class South Africans in townships are bearing the burden of the country’s electricity crisis., the study was conducted in Soweto and sought to explore experiences, responses, and solutions of community members regarding the energy crisis.“Everyone is having problems with electricity; everyone has experienced load-shedding. But people who live in Soweto and other working-class townships have bigger problems with electricity.
The study suggests there are more “continuities than discontinuities” of oppression, exploitation, misery and suffering. “No-one was paying attention to how the electricity crisis is being experienced by people in the black townships, in the villages and shacks. Eskom said it had 1,904MW on planned maintenance, while 17,255MW of capacity was unavailable due to breakdowns., Eskom suffered at least eight major breakdowns at its power stations, worsening strain on the already constrained power system.
