Black women look to break a streak of disappointment in the Senate

Retirements in Maryland, Delaware and California may clear the way for a history.

Those hoping to break that particular glass ceiling have a message for the party: Don’t blow it.

“The Democratic Party has got to come to Jesus, if you will, and figure out what they really stand for,” said former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun , the first of only two Black women elected to the Senate. “They talk about Black women being the base. It’s one thing to talk about somebody being your base and then turn around and not return the favor when Black women are trying to get elected.

Other potential Black candidates, however, are not lucky enough to live in a state that only has one at-large House member.
