Peter Okojie is a documentary filmmaker from Nigeria who, with his wife and co-director Teanna Okojie, produced a short film about his father-in-law's first visit to Nigeria and visiting the slave port of Badagry
What started as footage for the family to document a father’s first time in Nigeria, turned into a short documentary film about reconnecting with one’s roots. In 2017, Peter Okojie and Teanna Woods Okojie were getting married, and her father, Ronald Woods, was traveling to Nigeria for the wedding. With Peter being a filmmaker and Teanna a professional photographer, they were sure to film Ronald Woods’ experience in the motherland for the first time.
“When he arrived, I was able to film a couple of stuff around why he was there. My wife and I were talking about that would be significant to really film him being around Nigeria for the first time. We didn’t know how it was going to turn out, we just wanted to document his trip to Nigeria,”said.
Fast forward a few years to the COVID-19 pandemic, and they began developing an idea for a series of films about Black veterans.
I think that one thing I would say is that I really hope people watch and take a look and see that what Mr. Woods experienced would encourage them to consider taking a trip back home. It’s so important to know your roots. There is comfort to know that you are from somewhere and the confidence is there. So, you visiting there and experiencing it yourself, there is healing that takes place and I think it’s important for them to experience that healing, as well.
