Black Panther 2 Box Office Catching Up with Doctor Strange in Week 2

BlackPanther WakandaForever's total domestic box office is gearing up to pass the highest-grossing MCU movie of the year - Doctor Strange 2.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is closing the gap between its box office total and that of its predecessor Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Doctor Strange sequel is currently the highest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe film of 2022 and the second highest grossing domestic film of the year, behind Top Gun: Maverick.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Per THR, this weekend saw Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's box office run add an additional $66-$67 million for a cumulative domestic total of about $290 million. That makes its week 2 drop about 63%, which is a little more than expected, but still better than both previous 2022 MCU films Doctor Strange 2 and Thor: Love and Thunder. This divide has allowed Black Panther to close in on Strange's box office week 2 total.

Should that happen, Black Panther 2 would then be on solid ground and go neck-and-neck with Doctor Strange 2 for the rest of its run. At that point, it would be completely possible for Black Panther to overtake the previous film's total, which is $411.3 million domestic and $955.8 million worldwide, making it the #1 MCU film of the year.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is also likely going to pull off a strong run off the back of solid word of mouth. With an 85% score, it is the third highest-rated film of Phase 4 of the MCU on Rotten Tomatoes , and the audience score is even higher at 95%. That is considerably better than Multiverse of Madness' 74% critic score and 85% audience score, so even though the battle will be tight, there is a good chance that the Black Panther sequel will end up triumphant.
