Woodson chose a week in February because of Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday was February 12, and Frederick Douglass, who celebrated his birthday on February 14.Black History Month has received formal recognition from the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and most recently the Republic of Ireland.
