Following a string of near-collisions, investigators note that runway incidents often have one thing in common. In every instance, the cockpit voice recording (CVR) in the plane’s so-called “black box” had been overwritten.
One group currently opposed to changing the CVR regulations are pilots, according to several industry sources who requested anonymity.
“The pilot community does have concerns about whether the information could be publicly released,” acknowledges Homendy. “I will tell you, in our investigations, none of that has ever occurred.” “What’s happened is that we have the data,” she continues, answering her own question. “There are about roughly 1,500 to 1,700 runway incursions annually. We know the vast majority of those are low to no risk, but there are some that are risky.”
